In simple text (in English and Arabic), an unnamed girl tells the story of her family’s happy life before war came to their country and village. And then she shares their arduous and dangerous journey to safety, eventually arriving in another country that has become their home.

“We have a new home now,
a home with new sounds and smiles,
with smiles and people who help.
Will this always be home,
or will we go back one day?”

One of the most compelling and beautiful elements of the book are the illustrations. The author discovered the artwork of Syrian artist Nizar Ali Badr, who uses stones (the only materials available to him in the midst of war) to craft beautiful and powerful images.

Use this book to help share the stories of refugees and to model how countries should be welcoming refugees who are in desperate need.
