Tom Cledwyn on How Humility Can Limit Us

Tom Cledwyn is the co-founder of Drop Dead Generous, a project designed to spark creative generosity by funding small acts of kindness and amplifying the stories that follow. He is also the co-creator of Move Over Mother Teresa, a podcast focused on exploring personal purpose, contributions to the world, and interviewing creators. Tom makes the point that not only does generosity matter, it “scales” through visible action, contagious examples, and stories that inspire. In his conversation with Zoe Weil, he discusses:

  • Generosity Is Framed as a Potential Cultural Phenomenon, Not Just a Personal Trait: One of the strongest throughlines in the episode is Tom’s belief that the deeper issue is not simply that some people are selfish and others generous, but that generosity can be culturally sparked. In a world where people often take more than they give, Tom’s work is built around making generosity feel desirable, possible, and socially meaningful.
  • Telling the Stories of Good: A central insight in the conversation is the tension between humility and visibility. Tom openly acknowledges the discomfort many people feel about sharing good deeds, yet he makes a compelling argument that silence can limit impact. When a documentary about his kidney donation aired, several other people donated a kidney as a result, multiplying the impact of the original act.
  • Drop Dead Generous Is Less About Charity Than About Catalyzing New Possibilities: Drop Dead Generous’s $500 grant model doesn’t simply fund “need” in a conventional philanthropic sense. It funds imagination, initiative, and ripple effects. Tom’s reflections on the projects they’ve approved reveal that he is looking for ideas that create momentum beyond the initial $500, whether that means unlocking local action, inspiring others, or helping an individual turn one generous impulse into a larger social mechanism. The project is ultimately presented as an experiment in what happens when ordinary people are trusted with a small amount of money and a meaningful invitation.
  • Tom’s Broader Vision Connects Generosity, Media, and Systems Change: Tom speaks about social media, his time at Meta, and the need to use digital platforms differently. Rather than rejecting the internet outright, he is trying to redirect its power toward purpose-led storytelling, which is part of the thinking behind Move Over Mother Teresa. How is culture shaped, how are values transmitted, and how might media be repurposed to make generosity more visible, aspirational, and contagious?
