“Healing Species made so much sense to me because of that healing-of-the-heart aspect. When you’re working in humane education, you’re dealing with a lot of heartbreaking stuff. So many people come from abusive backgrounds, and often it seems the only way of dealing with it is to not go on.” -- Carolin Behrend
Many people have heard the adage that a dog is man's [sic] best friend, but children in Washington state and many other areas are learning about the healing power of canines who have themselves been abused, abandoned and neglected. Carolin Behrend, a graduate of IHE's M.Ed. program, is the Program Director for Healing Species Puget Sound.
Healing Species has an 11-week program that they take to schools, to help children learn about compassion, care, and healing. Children also have a chance to interact with rescued dogs and hear about their tragic stories (that fortunately have a happy ending).
