IHE Workshop Promotion Information

Workshop Promotion

Promoting a workshop for The Institute for Humane Education (IHE) is one of the most important steps in helping to create a successful workshop.  Although IHE has announcements in national publications, electronic mailing lists, and a variety of other online and printed calendars of events, we rely on our local organizers to bring in the most people.  The following steps will help you budget your time and reach many people in your area.

As soon as the venue is confirmed and the date is set:

  • Email the announcement to all of your contacts (IHE will provide the announcement) and ask them to post and pass on to their contacts.
  • Call/fax/email all local papers (those that have circulations within an hour’s drive) and ask where to send our press release (IHE will provide the PR).  Having a name to send the PR to may increase the chance that the paper will print it. They may require that it be faxed or emailed. Ask the paper for instructions.
  • Contact nearby (within an hour or so) schools and find out how the teachers, administration, and staff can get sent our announcement or see it posted in the school somewhere (like in a break room).
  • Locate local animal protection, human rights, environmental, and media/consumerism activist groups (and electronic mailing lists) and ask them to pass along the announcement to their membership and staff.  It is important that our announcement reach people who represent a variety of issues.
  • Approach houses of worship and college clubs and fraternities/sororities, especially community-service-oriented ones like Alpha Phi Omega, a national, co-ed, service fraternity.
  • Call and email your contacts several times more to follow-up, encourage them to let others know, promote the workshop, and build momentum.  Help them feel ownership and a stake in bringing the workshop to your community.

Throughout the promotion process:

  • Hang posters (IHE will provide poster) in high traffic areas.  Health food stores, co-ops, university bulletin boards, subway stops, community bulletin boards, social change organization bulletin boards, schools.  Please get permission first, where required.
  • Hand out brochures to those who are most interested (we don't do blind mailings or leave piles in public areas).
  • Make an announcement at the meetings of local progressive organizations.
  • Talk about the workshop and refer questions you cannot answer to our website (www.HumaneEducation.org) or directly to the workshop coordinator at amy@HumaneEducation.org).
  • Locate other options for announcing the workshop - is there a free paper you could post the announcement in?  What local organizations have community calendars in their publications or websites?  Can we submit an announcement to them?
  • Personal discussions make a huge difference.  If you know people who may be interested in the workshop, call them and let them know!

Three weeks before the workshop:

  • Contact the local papers again and resend them our press release.
  • Call for instructions, and then send local radio stations, especially university and public radio, our PR.
  • If we have contact lists, call contacts to let them know/remind them about the workshop.
  • Resend the announcement to your email contacts.
