IHE Workshop Local Organizer Information
IHE Workshop Local Organizer Information
Thank you for your interest in becoming a local organizer of a Sowing Seeds or MOGO workshop! We rely on our local organizers in order to bring workshops to communities throughout the U.S. and Canada. Organizing a workshop from afar would be very difficult without the dedication and hard work of local organizers.
The following list includes many of the responsibilities that the volunteer local organizers carry out:
- Finding a free or low cost venue (< $100) that seats 75+ people and is handicapped accessible, preferably near affordable accommodations, and within walking distance of vegan food. The ideal venue is a large, light-filled meeting room with good AV equipment, outdoor access, a white board and nearby parking and public transportation. Universities are great!
- Promoting the workshop locally. While IHE will let our database know about the workshop and will send out press releases to national and some regional publications and organizations, it is the local organizers who generally bring in the most people because of their local contacts.
- Providing information to IHE's Workshop Coordinator to help registrants who have questions about accommodations, restaurants, weather, local attractions, etc. (IHE will send all participants directions and details, but people may still have regional questions we can't answer).
- Creating list of local food options (restaurants, natural food stores, co-ops); Making arrangements for catered or delivered meals for venues in which vegan-friendly restaurants are not accessible.
- Working closely with the Workshop Coordinator to make the weekend run smoothly and effortlessly for participants - for example, finding out if the venue recycles (and if not, providing recycling bins and recycling their contents when the weekend is over).
- Helping the facilitator with set up Friday, throughout the workshop Saturday and Sunday, with cleanup Sunday evening, and possibly shipping materials back to IHE (at IHE’s expense).
Taking a workshop like Sowing Seeds or MOGO on the road can be challenging. Our generous volunteer local organizers have made these workshops possible, and hundreds of people have learned about humane education and become humane educators because of them. You are a crucial part of making a workshop a success!
