Join IHE's Virtual Outreach Team

Person typing on a laptop & using mouseYou love IHE and believe a more humane world is possible. You’ve always wanted to promote and support our work, but never knew how. Here’s your chance: Join IHE’s Virtual Outreach Team!

Word of mouth is the most powerful and productive way for people to learn about IHE’s mission and programs. That’s because when people hear about new organizations from friends and colleagues they take it more seriously.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

IHE supporters who are willing to help spread the word about upcoming courses and events through their contacts and networks.  Don’t have a lot of time?  There are different levels of involvement, so that you can participate as much or as little as you choose.

Here’s how it works:

We email you information about an upcoming course/event and you share it with others. Depending on the time you have available, that might mean anything from posting on your Facebook or other social media page(s), to sending email to people you know, to posting on your listservs, to contacting common ground groups in your area who might be interested.

What you receive:

As a member of IHE’s Virtual Outreach Team, you’ll take satisfaction knowing that you are making a valuable contribution toward making the world a better place. And, on a personal level, you never know the impact an IHE program or course might have in enriching someone’s life, and making it more meaningful. We will honor our Virtual Outreach Team members in a special edition of our News & Announcements at the end of the calendar year.

Below are tips and suggested ideas for outreach.

To join the IHE Virtual Outreach Team, email Marsha at Marsha@HumaneEducation.org.

Super Quick & Easy Ways to Get the Word Out:

  • Forward IHE Announcements to friends, family, and colleagues
  • Using text we send you, send emails to friends, family, and colleagues
  • Using text we send you, post to your social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Change.org, Care2.com, MySpace, Gaiam.com, Wiserearth, etc.)

Tips for Contacting Others:

  1. Keep it simple and clear.
  2. Please use the sample text we send you.  It makes sharing our information fast and easy and helps us keep our message clear and consistent.
  3. Stick with the people, virtual venues and organizations you know. If you belong to a listserv or participate in a discussion board, those people will be open to courses/events that you’re promoting because they know you. If they’ve never heard of you, it’ll seem like “spam” to them.
  4. Contact “common ground” people and organizations. If you’re promoting our humane parenting course, for example, you’d want to mainly share with parents and parenting-oriented groups. (However, you can always email your friends and colleagues and say “If you know of anyone who’d be interested in this, please pass it along.”)
  5. Choose quality over quantity. Sharing with those who are most likely to be interested is more important (and effective) than contacting a ton of folks who might only be mildly interested.

Get More Involved:

  • Are you a classroom teacher?
    • Send emails to fellow educators in your school and district (and surrounding districts, if you’re comfortable).
    • Post on educator listservs and/or discussion boards you belong to.
    • Post a flyer at your school.
  • Not a classroom teacher?
    • Send emails to educators or teachers that you know.
    • Send emails to people and organizations that share common ground with IHE’s mission (see suggestions below under ideas for outreach).
    • Post on common ground listservs and/or discussion boards you belong to.

Go Beyond Virtual:

  • Are you tabling at or hosting an event that has attendees who would be interested in our courses/events?
    • Email Amy at Amy@HumaneEducation.org. She’ll send you flyers and brochures to leave on a table or distribute by hand. Please allow as much notice prior to the event as possible.

Ideas for Outreach – who’s likely to be interested in IHE’s courses & events?

  • Your friends, family and colleagues who share your passion for changing the world.
  • Local activist/advocate organizations (environmental, animal, human rights, simple living, peace, social justice, veg, sustainable living, etc.)
  • Humane societies
  • Houses of worship (especially those that have a social justice component)
  • Universities and colleges (environmental, sociology, peace studies, education departments)
  • Universities and colleges (relevant student groups)
  • Universities and colleges (find out if they have a email bulletin they send out)
  • Schools (elementary and high schools) – public, private and alternative
  • Outdoor education centers and schools
  • Wellness and yoga centers
  • Zoos and Sanctuaries (if they have robust educational programming)
