Summer Institute 2010

Twelve teachers and community educators from as close as Maine and as far away as Hong Kong gathered together June 28-July 2, 2010, to learn, discuss, connect, and take back ways to integrate humane education into their own teaching practices.

A sample of what participants had to say:

"Maine was awesome. I spent my days with compassionate, wise and creative educators. I participated in reverence building outdoor activities, ate the most amazing vegan food and made new friends."
~ Kerri Twigg, IHE M.Ed. student, theater teacher

"It rejuvenated me and was an excellent way to gain CEUs. (The) value was immeasurable. I gained friends and confidence and knowledge to share."
~ Andy Bryan, teacher in Maine

"(The Summer Institute was) transformative and illustrative. I loved learning from my peers besides instructors. All the projects, the inclusion of outdoor activities, the warmth of instructors – made the education a truly humane experience. I learned to open my heart to new people and ideas much more quickly than I’ve done before."
~ Carolyn Ericksen-Buss, Reading teacher in Maine

"I expected it to be educational and fabulous, and it was both. My overall idea of what humane education means is much clearer. I’ve been inspired to continue. Humane education will no longer be a concept that I endeavor to incorporate into my classrooms and personal life; rather, it will be a chosen lifestyle. I am changed, and will continue to grow and change. I am better for it and will like myself more throughout my life because of it."
~ Deborah Burger, college ESL teacher in Michigan

"(The Summer Institute is) a great introduction to such massive topics. I appreciate the care and manner in which you presented information and were open to views and discussion! A great balance of activities and work by students to make each day exciting and different! (We) learn every day, but this week was one of learning, growing and expanding my mind and perspective. I look forward to growing as a humane educator!"

~ Andy Beardsley, English teacher in Maine

"(The Summer Institute was) more than what I had expected. Interesting, inspiring! Everyone, and I mean: everyone, is so kind, caring and supportive. The course content is great, and covered all areas and more. I have made a good network of friends - genuine and caring classmates with valuable experiences. I am also very grateful to how everyone at the Institute made my week so smooth, so unforgettable. It has totally opened a new page in my life and a new beginning to humane education."
~ Rosana Ng, Hong Kong
