Student Residency

Students at 2008 ResidencyThe required five-day residency for all IHE M.Ed. and M.A. students is an energizing week that includes practical, hands-on learning, and offers students an opportunity to practice and explore humane education issues, skills, and activities with fellow students and faculty.

Residency takes place at the Institute for Humane Education campus in Surry, Maine, and includes dynamic, interactive training, which helps students hone presentation skills, practice peer-teaching, create community, and connect with IHE staff and other humane educators.

Is Residency limited to only IHE M.Ed. and M.A. students?

What do students think of Residency? Here's a sampling of their views:

“It was an incredible residency. A gift beyond my wildest imagination.” ~ Shawn (2009)

“Phenomenal experience!  I am leaving here with several new friends, dozens of humane education lesson ideas/activities, clear visions of what humane role models look like, and lifelong memories of this Institute and its compassionate leaders. Meeting the instructors has been so inspirational and comforting! I also think of myself as relatively confident, but this week developed my confidence as a humane educator even more!”
~ Deb (2009)

“Residency was valuable professionally, emotionally, and spiritually. It exceeded my expectations and more than matched my hopes! It was informative, practical, challenging, magical, full, and fun! You all provided wonderful models of humane education in action and alive! THANK YOU for the gift of the week.”
~ Kurt (2009)

"It went far beyond my expectations or imagination.  It was such an AMAZING and AWESOME experience."
~ Hope (2008)

“Residency training exceeded my expectations by far! The presentations turned out to be such an extraordinary adventure!  I learned so much from my classmates. I’ll always look back at this week and the wonderful people I’ve met to draw life lessons and inspiration.”
~ Sophia (2008)

“Much more than I could have hoped for. I keep being amazed by the creativity, optimism, encouragement, challenge, mentorship, love, and different prisms that this team presents to all of us.  THANK YOU! I’m especially grateful for how much you let us teach each other.  You were such good models of teachers as learners and learners as teachers.”
~ Lynne (2008)

“I have learned and grown so very much and am so grateful for all of your leadership, diversity and creation of a safe, loving space. It is mind-blowing to look back at what I learned.”
~ Becky (2008)

"I cannot think of a single way this could be improved."
~ Garth (2007)

"Beyond my hopes.  I knew it would be super – but it exceeded my expectations."
~ Phoebe (2007)

"Residency actually exceeded my expectations. I was focused on what I may gain academically from the week and highly underestimated (ironically) the humanity of the shared experience.  Lovely, like-minded people coming together with graceful and gentle modeling from the faculty and staff."
~ Andrea (2007)
