History
The Institute for Humane Education (IHE) was founded in 1996*, by humane educators Zoe Weil and Rae Sikora, with the mission to train people to be comprehensive humane educators and to promote humane education worldwide. In 1997, IHE launched the first certification program in humane education in the United States, and in 2000 created the first Master of Education in Humane Education, affiliated through Cambridge College. Since its inception, IHE has been offering Sowing Seeds workshops throughout the U.S. and Canada and now offers MOGO workshops, as well as a variety of distance-learning courses.
IHE has become a recognized leader in humane education, drawing students, trainees and supporters from around the world. IHE faculty and staff speak at numerous conferences and events, and Zoe Weil, IHE’s President, continues to write books and articles introducing comprehensive humane education to teachers, educational reformers, activists, and changemakers all over the globe.
To date, IHE has trained more than 2,000 humane educators and helped bring humane education programs to countless young people and adults. IHE students, graduates and workshop alums continue to provide successful humane education programs worldwide.
*The organization was originally called the Center for Compassionate Living, until 1999.
