HECP Program Description

Length of Study

HECP students are required to complete a minimum of one course every four months and to complete the program within two years. Within this framework, students work at their own pace.

With rolling admissions and rolling matriculation, as well as the freedom to progress as quickly as you like, the HECP offers an extremely flexible option for those interested in becoming a humane educator.

Time Commitment

While students report spending anywhere from 10-40 hours a week on their studies in the HECP, most students spend an average of 12-20 hours a week to complete a course in about three months. In addition, most students work at least part-time while completing the HECP, and many work full-time. To request a sample reading list and documentary film list to give you an idea of the scope of the workload per course, please contact Amy at Amy@HumaneEducation.org. To take advantage of tuition discounts, qualifying HECP students must finish their current core content course within the required four-month time frame and register for the next core content course within 2 weeks of finishing.  Read more about tuition discounts.

Residency

HECP students are required to attend a five-day residency with IHE faculty at the Institute in Surry, Maine. This intensive training is offered during the summer only. During residency training, you’ll hone presentation skills, receive and give critical feedback, and make deep connections with faculty and others in the program.

See snapshots from past Residencies & read what students had to say about the experience.

Note: HECP students may return to residency a second time for $350 plus expenses provided there is room available. We may not be able to determine this until a few weeks prior to residency week in order to give new students ample opportunity to arrange their own participation.

For more information, email Amy at Amy@HumaneEducation.org

Mentoring

HECP students are offered mentoring on a monthly basis by IHE faculty. These mentoring sessions may take place via email or telephone, or in some cases, in person. Course readings and assignments can have a profound effect on individuals in the program, so IHE encourages students to take full advantage of the mentoring available. Mentoring enhances your educational experience and supports your personal and academic progress throughout your program of study.

Online Student Community

HECP students have access to IHE’s dedicated student discussion forum, the Online Classroom, through this website. In the Online Classroom, you’ll discuss assignments and program issues, post essays, communicate with faculty, and build community with fellow students. It is a vibrant, interactive source of guidance, inspiration, and community with like-minded people -- all essential components of distance-learning.
