As Heather helps her dad in the field, she discovers an orphaned baby Wood Duck. After her father warns her about loving the duck too much, because it will be hard to let him go when he’s ready, Heather takes the duckling, Mr. Peet, home. She feeds and cares for him and teaches him how to be a duck. When it’s time for Mr. Peet to leave, it is indeed hard for Heather to say goodbye, but she knows that she has loved Mr. Peet “just enough.”
