As effective humane educators, part of our role is to stay informed on global ethical issues, so that we can share accurate information and inspire positive action. But with so many global challenges, keeping up isn’t easy – especially when a lot of these issues are left out of mainstream media.

Here are 12 online sources for finding out more about animal protection issues.

1.  About.com: Animal Rights
This website offers basic overviews of a variety of animal protection issues, as well as news and other features.

Advocacy for Animals
This site brings together stories, news, information and more related to a variety of animal protection issues. Many of the posts are republished from other sources.

3.  Animal Emotions
Marc Bekoff is Professor Emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. His column in “Psychology Today” uses current events as a springboard for discussing animal protection issues, as well as their emotions and sentience.

4.  Animal Legal Defense Fund Blog
ALDF works for animal protection through the legal system. Their blog offers news and information about animal issues through the legal lens.

5.  Animal Studies Repository
Maintained by the Humane Society Institute for Science and Policy (HSISP) the Animal Studies Repository (ASR) is “a collection of academic, archival, and assorted other materials related to the various disciplines within the fields of animal studies and animal welfare science.”

6.  The Dodo
The Dodo is a hub for stories, photos, videos, and other media about nonhuman animals and our changing relationship with them. The Dodo seeks to “remind us of just how great our impact on animals is, and to inspire us to get it right this time.”

7.  HumaneSpot
HumaneSpot offers a wide range of tools and resources, such as research studies and data, on animal protection issues. The Humane Research Council also promotes effective strategies and techniques for animal protection advocates.

8.  IHE’s Resources
On our own Humane Connection blog, Pinterest page, and online Resource Center you’ll find numerous useful resources for finding out more about animal protection issues, from books and films, to websites and articles.

9.  One Green Planet
The “Animal Monster” channel of this “online guide to making conscious choices that help people, animals, and the planet” offers blog posts on a variety of animal protection issues.

10.  Our Hen House 
Our Hen House produces numerous multimedia resources — from an online magazine to podcasts to a TV show to ebooks — focused on informing and empowering people who are passionate about changing the world for nonhuman animals.

11. Striking at the Roots
Author and animal activist Mark Hawthorn’s blog offers interviews, stories, and more related to animal protection issues and animal activism.

12. We Animals
Photographer and humane educator Jo-Anne McArthur uses images of nonhuman animals in the human environment to “break down the barriers that humans have built which allow us to treat non-human animals as objects and not as beings with moral significance.” The photo essays on her website are a powerful learning tool.
